RED FLAGS
- [!]Iceland is expensive — flights, food, lodging

- [!]Lava chunks puncture under-spec’d tires
- [!]Limited course bailout options
- [!]Sells out fast as gravel grows internationally
RIDER FIT
Headwind on lava plains is the defining feature
Few rides on Earth match the landscape
Steady tempo wins; explosive efforts get punished by wind
Climbs are long but not steep enough to leverage
Open course but wind nullifies pure speed
Add a multi-day ride before/after for a real trip
Open volcanic plains with nothing for shelter — a 40 km/h headwind here turns a steady spin into a survival exercise. Group riding is not optional, it is mandatory.
TIRE INTEL
Sharp lava demands sidewall protection — sealant alone will not save you. Lower pressures help float over chunky sectors but do not get aggressive on a lightweight casing.
WEATHER PLAYBOOK
Late July Iceland: 5-15 °C, frequent rain showers, wind 30-60 km/h common. Pack a real waterproof shell, full-finger gloves, and a thermal base layer even on forecast-good days.
PACING PLAYBOOK
Sheltered start. Burn matches in calm air, build a buffer before the exposed plains.
Wind direction defines pace. Stay in any group you can find.
Iconic crossing. Photo if you must, but keep nutrition on schedule.
Wind often turns into a tailwind for the run-in. Push if you have it.
WHAT TO FEAR
- [!01]Sudden weather flips with no shelter
- [!02]Sidewall cuts on lava
- [!03]Hypothermia in a wet headwind
- [!04]River crossings adding chill mid-effort
- [!05]Mechanical isolation in the volcanic interior
TRAVEL OPS
Not the hardest gravel race in the world but maybe the most uniquely beautiful. Pack for weather, ride for the landscape.
