RIDER FIT
Pavement sectors reward power on the road
Singletrack sectors are where bike handling pays
Canyon climbs reward power-to-weight
Long mixed-surface day
BWR series points + visibility
It is more race than adventure
BWR’s signature is sending a road-fit field down genuine singletrack. The riders who stay upright through the dirt sectors win the day.
TIRE INTEL
A genuine compromise tire is mandatory. Too narrow / slick and you slide on dirt; too aggressive and you crawl on pavement. Most pros run 38-40 mm semi-slicks with reinforced casings.
WEATHER PLAYBOOK
April San Diego: coastal 16-22 °C, inland 22-30 °C, low humidity, almost no rain. Sun protection over rain gear; arm coolers help on canyon climbs.
PACING PLAYBOOK
Fast neutral roll. Hold the wheel, do not chase the early surge.
Where the front group splits. Stay with bike-handlers; survive the singletrack.
Sustained climbs, heat. Eat constantly, drink ahead of thirst.
Big-ring tempo back to the coast. Race the riders you can see.
WHAT TO FEAR
- [!01]Crashes on singletrack with road groups behind
- [!02]Heat exhaustion on inland canyon climbs
- [!03]Tire pressure mistakes — too low for road, too high for dirt
- [!04]Chain drops on chunky climbs
- [!05]Bonking late in the final pavement section
TRAVEL OPS
The most varied one-day race in North America. Bring bike-handling, climbing legs, and a tire that compromises gracefully.
