RED FLAGS
- [!]Lottery entry; sells out
- [!]Altitude flattens unacclimatised riders
- [!]Limited Beaver lodging — book early
- [!]Heat at the start, cold at the summit, plan layers
- [!]Mixed gravel/pavement makes tire choice tricky
RIDER FIT
Built entirely around uphill power
Acclimated riders have a huge edge
Lifetime points, marquee field
Short event but quality of effort is everything
Pair with Bryce/Zion road trip
Wrong shape entirely
A 10-mile final climb that averages 7% with pitches of 14% — at 3,000 m altitude. After 60 miles of climbing already, this is where the race is won and lost.
TIRE INTEL
The course mixes gravel and pavement on the way up. Many pros run 36-38 mm fast tires for the pavement segments and accept some grip loss on gravel — others go 40 mm for descent confidence.
WEATHER PLAYBOOK
Mid-July Utah: 28-35 °C in Beaver, 12-22 °C at Eagle Point summit. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible above 3,000 m. Pack a packable shell for the descent.
PACING PLAYBOOK
Fast neutral. Resist surging onto the first climb — pace by HR, not the group.
Long climb at altitude. Ride your watts; do not let pride push you past threshold.
Recovery section. Eat aggressively; this is your last chance before Col d’Crush.
The defining climb. Walk the steepest pitches if you must. The summit always comes.
WHAT TO FEAR
- [!01]Going out too hard at altitude
- [!02]Cracking on Col d’Crush with no recovery left
- [!03]Cold descent off the summit if cloudy
- [!04]Underestimating fueling on a "short" race
- [!05]Tire pressure mistakes on the mixed surface
TRAVEL OPS
Short on miles, brutal on the body. Climbers, altitude lovers and buckle-collectors will love it. Anyone else gets schooled.
