RIDER FIT
Sustained foothill climbs reward power-to-weight
Course at 1,800-2,400 m — acclimation matters
Pair with a Sawtooth riding holiday
Big Potato is a real 8-12 hr day
Loose descents reward bike handling
Marquee event with strong visibility
Sustained efforts at 2,000-2,400 m are the physical test, but the festival weekend lets you choose your distance honestly. Big Potato is the marquee; Baked Potato is the smart play for first-timers.
TIRE INTEL
Mostly graded ranch road with chunkier descents — favour rolling speed but keep some grip for loose corners at altitude.
WEATHER PLAYBOOK
Early September Sawtooth: cool starts (3-8 °C), highs 18-25 °C, possible afternoon thunderstorms above 2,000 m. Bring a packable shell and arm warmers.
PACING PLAYBOOK
Climb out of Ketchum into the foothills. Easy to over-pace at altitude — sit on a wheel.
Long ranch-road tempo. Stay fueled, drink ahead of thirst.
The biggest climbs. Pace by HR; the race is decided here.
Long descent back to town. Stay sharp; tired riders crash here.
WHAT TO FEAR
- [!01]Altitude headaches and HR ceiling
- [!02]Cracking on the mid-course high point
- [!03]Cold descent off the high point if cloudy
- [!04]Underestimating fueling at altitude
- [!05]Wildfire smoke in some years
